Thermopsis villosa (Carolina Lupine) 1G

Also called Carolina Lupine, this unique native will light up the garden in late spring to summer with stunning tall butter yellow blooms. After the blooms, the long-flattened seed pods add an additional level of interest. Leaves are large and trifoliate producing a large bushy plant. Although a fellow member of the legume family, Thermopsis is not a lupine but gains its common name from the flower's resemblance. An excellent performer in the high heat and humidity of the Southeast. Due to the long taproot it produces, it is tough as nails in a drought but quite difficult to relocate.
